I love nothing more than taking photos – in fact I feel compelled to do so. I have a hard and fast rule that I don’t go anywhere without a camera. Only once did I break it when I stowed my cameras out of reach in my trunk. I was driving down a dirt road in a raging storm in Mexico and rounding a blind corner, I had to slam on my brakes to avoid hitting a horse. Seeing me, the horse reared up and at the same time a spectacular bolt of lightning flashed in the sky behind him. I am still in pain having missed that shot and have never been without my camera since.
In my 20+ years as a professional photographer I have had the pleasure of photographing many brilliant and interesting people. My idol (and secret crush) Warren Buffet, the amazing Leslie Stahl and Evelyn Lauder, legends Stevie Ray Vaughan, Ray Charles and Leonardo DiCaprio. I had a blast photographing Captain Morgan in the Bahamas for Seagram’s. I shot a week long wedding in a spectacular castle in Tuscany, as well as a small sweet nuptial in white swimsuits on the beach in Laguna. To me, all my subjects are interesting and beautiful. The relationship I have with my clients has been the cornerstone of my business. I have photographed a couple’s wedding and their pregnancies and the children that follow. I feel incredibly grateful for the privilege of creating art while documenting lives.
I also love, love, love to teach. I knew I came from a family of educators but recently learned that four of my great uncles were professional photographers. I taught Black and White Art Photography at the Laguna College of Art + Design (LCAD) as well as numerous private students, many of whom are now successful professional photographers.
Whether I’m photographing a newborn baby, the road to Hana, or (someday) a rearing horse in a lightning storm- I feel truly blessed. When you are living and working your passion there’s one thing I know for sure…It’s all good.
